The Moraga Road Pipeline was engineered and built to increase the reliability of water service in portions of Lafayette, Moraga, and Orinda. Aging facilities could not be depended on to provide full water service during peak use. This project was part of a comprehensive Water Treatment and Transmission Improvement Program to improve the reliability of water.

Work included installing 3,100 feet of 48-inch diameter Mortar Lined and Coated Steel (ML&CS) pipe and 14,500 feet of 36-inch diameter ML&CS pipe and all appurtenances and fittings. The project also included a large grading and paving scope. Approximately 1.2 miles of the pipeline stretches cross-country through the Lafayette Reservoir and Recreation Area in Lafayette, which was a highly sensitive environmental zone. In addition approximately two miles of the pipeline was located on heavily traveled Moraga Road, which required extensive traffic coordination for road closures, detours and deadlines.
